Fighting For Your Rights

$34.9 Million Verdict

On October 11 of 2010, Debra and Bill Hackett of Galt, California, were driving their bus on Highway 12, when a semi-truck crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with the bus.

The accident was catastrophic, causing a major closed head wound to Mrs. Hackett and rendering her paralyzed.

This case turned on the desire of Mrs. Hackett and her family to have her live at home, and be treated there. The Hacketts were represented by Eliot Reiner, of Eliot Reiner, APLC , of Sacramento, along with members of Reiner's previous firm, Dreyer, Babich, Buccola Wood Campora, LLP.

The jury awarded $31.9 million to Mrs. Hackett and $3 million to her husband, for loss of consortium.

The verdict was the largest personal injury award ever in Sacramento County — larger than the next largest verdict by more than $10 million.

"Mrs. Hackett's injuries were severe, but she knew what mattered most to her," said Eliot Reiner. "It was very fulfilling to come through for her."
